Work it out on paper

Past about two steps, nobody holds the whole thing in their head. Writing each step down is not a sign of weakness. It is how everyone past mental-arithmetic range does math, including the people who are good at it.

How to use it

  1. One step per line.
  2. Carry the whole expression down each time, not just the part you changed.
  3. Turn on the work area in Settings. It renders your steps as math as you type and never grades them.

Example

3x+5=203x=15x=5\begin{aligned} 3x + 5 &= 20 \\ 3x &= 15 \\ x &= 5 \end{aligned}

Where it goes wrong

  • Doing two steps at once and losing a sign between them.
  • Writing only the changed part and forgetting what the rest was.
