practiceDecimals and percents

A percent is a fraction with 100 on the bottom. 35% is 35 out of 100, which is 0.35, which is 7/20. Fractions, decimals and percents are three ways to write the same number.

How to use it

  1. Percent to decimal: divide by 100, so the point moves two places left.
  2. Decimal to percent: multiply by 100, so the point moves two places right.
  3. Fraction to percent: divide top by bottom, then multiply by 100. Or scale the fraction so the bottom is 100.

Example

35%=35100=0.3535\% = \frac{35}{100} = 0.35
0.08=8%0.08 = 8\%
34=75100=75%\frac{3}{4} = \frac{75}{100} = 75\%

Where it goes wrong

  • Moving the point one place instead of two: 35% is not 3.5.
  • Writing 1/8 as 12.5 instead of 12.5%. The percent sign is part of the number.
