Chapter 9 · Questions · page 52 of 68

How do you find a unit rate?

Short answerDivide the first amount by the second so the second becomes 1. 150 miles in 3 hours is 150 ÷ 3, which is 50 miles per hour.

A unit rate tells you how much for one of something: per hour, per pound, per minute. The word "per" is the clue that you divide by that thing.

How to use it

  1. Write the amount over the thing you want "per".
  2. Divide.
  3. Name the units in the answer: miles per hour, dollars per pound.

Example

1503=50\frac{150}{3} = 50
124=3\frac{12}{4} = 3
7.55=1.5\frac{7.5}{5} = 1.5

Where it goes wrong

  • Dividing the wrong way round. Miles per hour is miles divided by hours.
  • Dropping the units, which hides whether the division went the right way.
