What an equation is

practiceTwo-step equations

An equation says two things are equal. Solving it means finding the value of the variable that makes the statement true. The equals sign is a balance: whatever you do to one side, you do to the other, and it stays true.

How to use it

  1. Decide what has been done to the variable.
  2. Undo it, doing the same thing to both sides.
  3. Keep going until the variable is alone.

Example

x+4=10  ⇒  x=6x + 4 = 10 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 6
3x=12  ⇒  x=43x = 12 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 4

Where it goes wrong

  • Doing something to one side only.
  • Treating the equals sign as "the answer is" rather than "is the same as."
