Order of operations

When an expression has several operations, there is one agreed order: grouping symbols first, then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. Multiplication does not come before division, and addition does not come before subtraction; those pairs are read left to right. The order exists so that everyone gets the same answer from the same expression.

Example · Evaluate.

(3−4)×2(3 - 4) \times 2
Steps
  1. Parentheses first.3−4=−1\displaystyle 3 - 4 = -1
  2. Then multiply.−1×2=−2\displaystyle -1 \times 2 = -2
