Like terms and the distributive property

Like terms have exactly the same variable part, so 3x and 5x can be combined into 8x, but 3x and 5 cannot. The distributive property says a(b + c) = ab + ac: whatever is outside the parentheses multiplies every term inside. Simplifying an expression means distributing anything that needs it and then combining like terms.

Example · Simplify.

−5y+8y+12-5y + 8y + 12
Steps
  1. Group the y terms and the constant terms.(−5y+8y)+(12)\displaystyle (-5y + 8y) + (12 )
  2. Add the coefficients of like terms. Each term keeps the sign in front of it.3y+12\displaystyle 3y + 12
